I run because I love to run. Not because I have to run and think I should run. Stop shoulding yourself. Do what you do because you love it and if you don’t love it do something else. Yes, it really is that simple. If you have to do it then find a reason to be thankful for whatever it is and begin to love that too because we all have things we have to do and things we’d rather be doing. Today in response to an article about how “you don’t have to Super size your races” I wrote a comment. I’m tired of people feeling like they HAVE to do the hardest, baddest, craziest shit. You don’t. Just do what you love. In my comment I wrote that from time to time I see articles out there or posts from people who have (for some reason) put some "distance" pressure on themselves to do longer and longer ultras and at some point they push back against longer ultras due to burn out or a busy life. If you're not enjoying the journey or keep DNFing... doing longer ultras will just make you feel worse. No one needs to feel bad about not running the longest distances. There is a time to scale back and focus on speed and strength. I did it this year for the first 6 months of the year to get more strength and it worked. For many of us 200 IS the new 100 because we want adventure. We don't deeply care about times, training thresholds, diet, vo2 max or PRs. We just want to be out in nature for longer. We want to play and experience something outside of ourselves, perhaps even a spiritual experience. If you don’t feel like doing 100, 200, or more then don’t. It’s not a competition to see who can do the most. It’s about the day to day process. I choose adventure whether it be working on my treadmill desk today so I can at least move while I work 8hrs on the computer or 200 miles in Australia in February! You don’t have to prove anything. You are already good enough. Choose races and distance because you want to choose them not for external reasons. #runnersofinstagram #200isthenew100
