It’s ok to be different. When we don’t suppress parts of ourselves, we can better allow our innate talents to develop by embracing what makes us weird and unique. I believe we all have gifts we can develop and share with the world. Conforming can stunt our growth. Sure, fitting in has its place and value in society, but you can’t do anything new and ground breaking by conforming or giving up too much of yourself in exchange for comfort, protection and security that comes with fitting in. As a child I remember feeling very different, shy, and uncomfortable in social situations. I preferred to ride horses through the woods, making tunnels through canary grass as tall as a grown man, reading books on our farmhouse roof, and writing stories in a notebook high up in the branches of an alder tree. The games and social drama of school and of my parent’s social lives was overwhelming to me. I retreated to my own imaginary world and to nature. Fast forward to adulthood: time and experience gave me an ease in the world and my fierce independence which came at a price as a child, now gives me a spontaneity and confidence that can really lead to any crazy, incredible thing happening at any time in my life. I like that kind of excitement. Today I fly to Australia to race in an inaugural 218 mile point to point trail race on the Western Endurance Scenic Trail, called the Delirious WEST 200. It starts Feb 20. Honestly, the toughest part is missing my family for 2 weeks! Not at all worried about the race 😂 ok maybe a little worried about 🕷 and 🐍 and my 28 hour flight but the running, that’s my thing! Can’t wait for that. I’ll be posting more about what I’m doing for drop bags, crewing, pacing and what I’m using for the race! @solagkev (my crew/pacer) and I will also be producing a podcast about the race with interviews before, during and after! 🎤 🎤 📻 #runnersofinstagram #trailrunninglife #altrarunning #australia #altraathlete #selfpropelled #ultimatedirection #runner #run
