This past weekend I had the privilege to experience ROYAL RAID Although I could not race in the 70km as planned, due to injury, I could experience the island, the trail and the lovely people of Mauritius and Reunion.

A month ago, I realized that my foot will not recover in time to be competitive at the 70km Royal Raid and I contacted the organizers to send a substitution. They came back to me and said that I should still do the trip. This act of understanding and accommodating me as an injured athlete immediately earned my respect for the race organizers. Most likely because the co-organizer is a runner himself, one of the best in Mauritius and certainly a top 20 at the next world champs. Simon Desvaux de Marigny won his own race amidst fierce competition from Reunion with an average pace of 5min/km over 70km.

Racing wasn't my only goal to go to Mauritius and I also did a Trail Workshop which attracted 25 interested French-speaking friends from Reunion :-) It ended up being a lot more practical and with the help of Simon's translation, I think they understood something I said :-)

We also established a relationship between Racing Republic and MaXiRace Cape Winelands which means that the winners in Maxi race SA will most likely get to see Mauritius... TBC. We will also host one of the best Mauritian runners for this year's Maxi race. This relationship is not exclusive to elites only and we will also create package deals for Saffas who wants to race abroad.

It is my 4th time returning to Mauritius for a trail race. The benefits certainly outweigh other international trips due to the close proximity, 5-star accommodation, affordable flights, and top quality event organizing. If you would like to experience an international race in 2019/2020 - Mauritius is the place to go! Just beware of the taking the full-board option before an important race, as the relaxed atmosphere of beach cocktails might make you lazy to run up the very steep volcanic mountains.

One of my highlights was to see one of my AlpasFit athletes Gilbert N Christine Sadoo finishing his 37km race in 12th position in a time of 4:05, 17 minutes faster than his 2018 time and 28mins faster than my prediction. Gilbert also celebrated his birthday on Saturday, he is a full-time banker, dad, and very committed athlete! - Watch this space

My 15km race was enjoyable, and a good humbling experience to line-up with a thousand+ runners who all finished with a smile. I realized how lucky I was to run like I did over the past 5 years but I also wondered if I will ever be back in elite shape. I guess there is only one way to find out. Overcome this injury and start all over again.

To my ongoing supporters, Biogen Garmin häzz ButtaNutt Tree Nut Spreads Amiici Vision Racing Republic thank you for still believing in me when I start doubting myself.
