“Let’s go on a road trip, it’ll be fun.”
We went just south of Tucson, where there’re pristine rolling hills, the Arizona Trail, Madera Canyon and limitless outdoor rec opportunities, including all-time trail running and local runners.
But, there’s a mining company that’s one permit shy of creating a mile-wide open pit copper mine in the shadows of Mt. Wrightson. The damage will be irreversible. There are lawsuits, but the mining company has already widened trails into roads, put metal stakes in watering holes of javelinas, and put misleading signage on Forest Service land.
What can we do?
For the Rosemont Mine, not much. Most of the battle will happen via legal documents. But that’s not the case with other mines.
#1 thing we can do is learn about proposed mines in our regions and show up early on in the permitting processes. Ask questions, speak at hearings, comment on public record whether you think ___ mine should exist or whether our public land should stay accessible to all. Mine’s are situational; nothing’s black and white. But the first step: learning and taking part in the decision making of our shared public lands. Mining executives are very skilled at keeping their permitting processes hidden and the public ignorant.
Comment if you know about a proposed mine in your backyard.
