Clare Gallagher, le texte de sa publication du 30-05-2019 16:40:07 :
While running across Joshua Tree National Parklast weekend, I felt so proud that our country had protected this place. Come to find out, that it was one woman, Minerva Hoyt, who essentially singlehandedly protected it. Of course, this was after the millennia of land stewardship by the Chemehuevi (also known as Southern Paiutes), Serrano, & Cahuilla tribes, who protected and thrived in this harsh, yet mindnumbingly beautiful and abundant desert landscape.

This one woman, Hoyt, spent years persuading National Park supervisors to protect it, but a key visit in 1934 by the superintendent left her proposal lifeless, as he didn’t see the appeal of preserving the area. So, she relentlessly used her connections and eventually sent two photo albums to President FDR. Those photos sealed the deal, as he created a national monument in 1936. But throughout the rest of the 20th century, many mining leases and large scale developments threatened and reduced the area and it wasn’t until 1994 it became a National Park. Now, 2.8 million people per year people enjoy the otherworldly Joshua Trees and rock formations.

So, what’s happening today? There’s always something… There’s a proposed hydropower project on the border of the park. If you live in California, check out Senate Bill 772. California is leading the way with renewable energy, but HOW that energy is stored is currently a political Wild West. The more you read, you’ll find it’s not pretty nor simple. Also, for the record, hydropower is not clean. This project would drain the underlying aquifer of J Tree NP and in the face of climate change, that’s the last thing we need.
