THE ARCTIC REFUGE! Returning home, I feel more motivated than ever to protect our public lands and the people who still live off them. In many ways, Alaska is like another planet and yet still, the Arctic National Wildlife is like another universe. Wild, untouched and unclimbed mountains in the Brooks Range, flanked by the Coastal Plains: pristine, fragile and verdant tundra, the place where the porcupine caribou birth their babies during their 3,000 mile yearly migrations.

Unfortunately, there could be seismic testing for oil on the coastal plains. The Trump admin is leasing this land for oil extraction, arguably illegally via a provision snuck into the 2017 tax bill. This is multifaceted, but the bottom line is simple: we must protect the Arctic Refuge immediately. The place that allows the porcupine caribou herd to thrive, and in turn, the Gwichin people, who rely on the caribou for food and culture. As a Coloradan proud of my state’s protected public lands, I know that if this type of threat were as imminent as this one in the Arctic, we’d implore everyone who cares about public lands and human rights to stand with us. Which is why I stand with the Gwich’in and am urging my Rep to protect the Arctic Refuge.

My Rep, Joe Neguse of District 2 in Colorado has voted to protect the Refuge. Other Reps in Colorado, not so much. The coolest part about American public lands: we are all owners. Why should we let private corporations control what happens to them? We talk abut energy freedom, yet what part of that picture sounds like freedom to you? Especially considering there’s not even that much oil in the Refuge!

What can you do right now? There’s a bill (H.R. 1146) in the House of Reps up for a vote in July to protect the Refuge. Call your Reps! Colorado’s listed below.

Thank these Reps for co-sponsoring the Bill:
Congressman Joe Neguse - 2nd District 202-225-2161
Dianne DeGette - 1st D 202-225-4431
Jason Crow - 6th D 202-225-7882
Ed Perlmutter-7th D 202-225-2645

Urge these reps to vote YES on HR 1146, to protect public lands:
Scott Tipton - 3rd D 202-225-4761
Ken Buck- 4th D 202-225-4676
Doug Lamborn - 5th D 202-225-4422
