Sleeping on the job / roasting some nuts on the fire.

Ten days ago we directed our first ever event that went through an entire night. Our Whistler Alpine Meadows (WAM) 110k race had a 28 hour cutoff, and given that the winning time was just a slice under 15 hours, all 28 hours were completely necessary to offer a fair cutoff time.

I've been a big proponent since day one that our finish line experience had to be special and that at all of our races we would celebrate every single runner, start to finish, as though they were the most important runner in our race...because they are. Every single runner is just as important as the next, and many mid and back of the pack runners have far more inspirational tales than those who happen to be the quickest across the line.

From 4am on Saturday through until 8am on Sunday, I worked our start - finish line and celebrated every single person who attained a finish, all 650 finishers across all four distances (12k/25k/55k/110k).

I stepped aside but twice, once for 38 minutes and once for about 60 minutes.

Our finish line was at the Riverside Resort and we were staying in cabins that were but 200 feet away. After the lead 110k runner crossed the line I radioed the final aid station in the race and got a split time of about 40 minutes to second place. I ran to my cabin, shut my eyes for 38 minutes, and got back to the finish exactly 30 seconds before 2nd and 3rd came across the line.

At about 3:30am I was completely fried and I needed a proper nap so I took a 60 minute break. You never know how the timing will work out and I ended up missing 8 people finish. The previous hour only had 2 finishers. I guess 642 out of 650 ain't bad, but I'll do better next year 😊

Massive props to those around myself and Geoff who dedicate themselves as much as we do. Every single person who works behind the scenes gave everything of themselves to provide the best experience possible for each and every runner this year.

I can't believe we're going to do a 175k with 9500 meters and a 48 hour cutoff next year. I'm gonna need more caffeine to survive that one.
