Day 8 - PM
Harvey has made it to Elk Park and the Mountain Harbour B&B & Hiker Hostel. Kelly ODell confirmed he arrived, ate and is in bed. The crew will sleep in the hostel. Harvey will sleep in the van. #vanlife She said he looked amazing. He finished the day with over 62 miles. His eight day total is 389.1 miles. He has also climbed 112,714.1 ft. His daily average is 48.64 miles per ROAD iD's tracker here: https://www.roadid.com/pages/wheresharvey

As Harvey Lewis runs, there are critical decisions at play throughout the day, everyday by Harvey and his crew. Here is a great example of the planning and decisions, and adjustments, that took place tonight. The below is from Luke Thoreson who along with Matthew Garrod, are the logisitics/planning masterminds behind Team Harvey. If you were responsible for logistics, what to you do recommend?

On Wednesday, Harvey rolled in to Carver’s Gap at around 6 pm. The next road crossing is 19E – Elk Park NC, 14.8 miles away. By this point, Harvey had already done 47.3 miles. (Sunset is 8:43 pm if that factors in your decision, so there’s about 3 hours of light left)

What do you do?
A) Call the day done at Carver’s Gap. 47.3 is a little short, but this is where Jurek and Joe "Stringbean" McConaughy were when they set their records.
B) Keep going to 19E, even though it will mean putting in a 62.1 mile day.
C) Find out that there’s a hostel 3 miles before 19E – Elk Park, and stay there putting in roughly 59 miles on the day.

What do you do?

Ah, but wait it’s not that simple.

Let’s say he decided to stay at Carver’s Gap. There are potential overnight stops for tomorrow at 39.5, 48.1, 52.5, or 68.6 miles.

How does that affect your choice?

But what if he continues on to 19E, which means the overnight stops tomorrow are 37.7, 53.8, or 60.3 miles.

Now what do you decide to do?

This decision doesn’t just affect today – it potentially affects every day down the trail. So once we know the stopping location for the day, we start by looking at the next few days and then look at the impact that today will have on, say, July 2nd. You have to look at each day, but then also examine how that fits into this entire seven week long journey.

The final decision is made by Harvey and his dad. The remote team provides as much information and input as they can, but with limited cell coverage even on those days when we can get info to them, Harvey and Harvey are the ones calling the shots.

So now, decisions will be made about what time to hit the trail tomorrow morning.

I will share Starbucks #wheresHArvey run streak winners tomorrow pm.
