Beautiful sunset in Cleveland at Northcoast 24. Fellow USA 24 Hour teammate Olivier Leblond has a substantial lead with nearly 8 hours to go, nearly 10 loops ahead of the next runner. It was hard to bow out of the race. I love running Northcoast 24 and it was a different perspective to see much of it from the sidelines after running 50k, but also wanting to get fully recovered and not create any permanent damage. That may sound counterintuitive with me running Badwater 5 days after the AT but I had a different goal in Badwater of just finishing. I had hoped at the start the possibility of feeling really back but still working on equilibrium and to run 100% effort in the 24 hour race for as many miles as we cover would have risked injury and made it extremely difficult to hit my Clifbar pace time of 3:05 for the St. George Marathon in 2 weeks.

Definite highlight was having Isaac Philips as crew along side my friends Matt & Kyle who were crewing for our friends Derek & Luke. Loved seeing all the runners, friends come out and that Brian is already excited about future developments for Northcoast 24 next year. The massage tent was awesome as well as the having the first opportunity to see a Podiatrist.

The most amazing running story I saw and runners I met were Sarah and her husband Chris. Sarah was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer at the young age of 35. She and her husband and friends were running with shirts that said “Bound and Determined”. Her smile, charisma and determination were purely inspiring. It was an honor to run a lap with her. She wants to be a positive example to others experiencing the same to continue to live life and to never give up. In her last visit to the doctor she told me they said her tumor has actually gone down in size. She will also be running the Columbus Marathon next month. Wishing Sarah and the others a fantastic rest of the race. #sarahstrong
