Welcome to Day 5 of the vegetarian challenge with profiled athlete Catra Corbett. To say Catra loves ultras and nature would be an understatement. She’s competed in over 250 ultramarathons. While she attests that she’s not a fast runner per se, she definitely has stamina and is an extremely consistent runner. She holds the fastest known time on the John Muir Trail (out and back 424 miles) and has competed in countless varieties of ultras. She is well known for her trusty friend, Truman, who runs by her side (photo below).

Here were her responses to the questions of Michael Wardian and I.

1) How long have you been vegetarian/vegan?
I was first vegetarian at age 9. I became vegan 24 years ago

2) What is your favorite vegetarian/vegan dish?
I mostly try to eat raw but I do love green curry with veggies and I love Daiya vegan pizza .
I’m all about eating big huge salads with all kinds of veggies for my main meal at dinner

3) What is you favorite vegetarian/vegan race day food?
I use Muir energy gels , trail butter almond butter packets (only one flavor is vegan) any and all fruit , baby food packets, avocados and dates

4) What is the hardest thing about being a vegetarian/vegan?
Well being vegan isn’t that hard but for me I don’t eat soy or Gluten so this is more of a challenge. Since I have to read all labels.

5) Who are some vegetarian/vegans that you follow?
Rich Roll , Redfo ( from the band LMFAO and Fiona Oaks

6) What food did you think you would miss and didn't? Nothing

7) What food did you find since becoming a vegetarian/vegan that you absolutely love?
It’s hard for me to answer because I’ve been vegan 24 years, I would have to say beets 😊

8. What is your biggest motivation for eating plant based?
For me Vegan is not just a diet it’s a lifestyle. I want to save as many animals as I can and not contribute to their death .
We don’t need to eat animals .
I love all animals.
I’m not wasting away and look how healthy I am eating a plant based diet.
I use only vegan skin care , products and don’t wear leather , wool or anything that comes from an animal .

9) What is an event/races you are excited to pursue in 2019?
I have to pick only one 🤷🏻‍♀️
Ok , west 200 in Australia
and Establishing an OKT on a road route called the EL Camino Sierra from Los Angeles to Lake Tahoe 424 miles 😊
