Welcome to day 6 of the vegetarian challenge as we profile legendary Italian ultrarunner Marco Olmo. Marco astounded the running world winning the famed and extremely competitive - Ultra Trail Mont Blanc in 2006 and 2007. I should mention he was 58 years of age when he won the first time. His title was only taken in 2008 by Ultrarunner Kilian Jornet.

Marco defied logic with his competitiveness, winning desert races and other extreme ultras into his 60’s. When I had the opportunity to share a week with him in Marathon Des Sables he was humble, always friendly and giving. We did our best to work with our language barrier. Everyone loves Marco and in Europe he is one of the best known runners.

When interviewed in Morocco by journalist, Alice Hunter Morison, following Marathon Des Sables he shared-

“an animal for me is not a meal, but a living being. And with vegetarianism we will solve much of the tragedy of hunger in the world,” he says, “I do have particular favorite foods, but based on local products: potatoes, chestnuts, bread, pasta, polenta, a little cheese seasoning, extra virgin olive oil. The food of our ancestors.” *

These were Marco’s responses to our questions (translated from Italian to English by our mutual friend Dino Bonelli).

1) How long have you been vegetarian/vegan?
I have been vegetarian for 32 years.

2) What is your favorite vegetarian/vegan dish? potato gnocchi with oil and great Kinara

3) What is you favorite vegetarian/vegan race day food?
No particular foods; I eat what I eat throughout the week, yet pasta with oil is always a staple before a race.

4) What is the hardest thing about being a vegetarian/vegan?
“no problem, you make zig zag in the menu.”

5) What did you wish you knew before becoming vegetarian/vegan? I knew it was possible, I knew about vegetarians.

6) What food did you think you would miss and didn't? If you are convinced you do not miss anything, otherwise it would be a deprivation.

7) What is your biggest motivation for eating plant based? respect for all living beings.

8. What is an event/races you are excited to pursue in 2019? Given my age of 70, I run for myself.

Marco impressed me the strength of his mind and body running Marathon Des Sables. The race is formidable covering about 160 miles in 6 days; largely across sand dunes and other obstacles. Running in giant sand dunes is a bit like running in 10 inches of snow. It takes a lot of power to climb and move for that matter. Marco gracefully climbed and descended the dunes like a surfer riding the waves. I was honored to run with his the final day of our race. Even into his late 60’s he was finishing a race with more than 1,300 people in the top 20.
