Licking wounds

A day that started with high hopes on our first ever Fleche Wallonne ended with the team trying to figure how it could get wrong so quickly .

Our Belgian race leader Ben Hermans was the one with the most nagging of questions.

He was taken to a hospital after a mid race crash that took him down with other riders including teammate Awet Gebremedhin.

Hermans : “I can’t get why my bad luck is haunting me like this. What did I do wrong this season? “

He suffered from a series of setbacks this season but came to Wallonne with great hopes to be there in the last climb , the famous Mur de Hoy.

Unfortunately, he did not even come close to that. The crash came abruptly .

Ben : “ I felt pretty good. Riding in the front and worrying about the wind changing direction when suddenly some guys break pretty hard in front of us and we went down with quite a lot of riders. I went over my handlebar and fell straight on my knee. “

He was taken to the hospital for stitches on his right knee.

Back to the race. “ We understood we need a new plan” said our Norwegian Rider August Jensen.

The problem was that there were not many options left. Colombian Edwin Avila was dropped and Awet - crashed out of the race . Israeli Guy Sagiv was stuck behind two crashes and was soon out too.,

August and teammate Daniel Turek tried to take it alone on their shoulders but when the riders left in the peloton approached the last 20 km, - Both could not muster what’s
Needed at this world tour race level.

Left was Ben Hermans, feeling almost guilty. “I really wanted to make it happen this time after so many injuries or mishaps that happened to me since the start of the season “ he said. “ I want so badly to deliver for the team but every time I got the opportunity, something happened”.

Now he hopes to come back as soon as. The stitches in his Knee will keep him away from the bike for 5 to 10 days. A significant setback before the selection of our squads to the Giro d'Italia and Amgen Tour of California. “Hope I can recover on time” he said.

Our Pro Mamager Kjell Carlström was as always cool under fire: “ We had a real bad day. But injuries and set backs are part of this business. We will deal with the new challenge”.
