AUSTRIA 🇦🇹 and THE UNLUCKY AUSTRIAN 🇦🇹

All was ready for MATTHIAS BRANDLE to shine.

He was executing his - and the team - plan to perfection deep into the second stage. Leading a 7 men breakaway , being the virtual leader of the race and having a realistic chance to finish the day with the Leader Jersey.

“ I was planning to attack the breakaway in the last lap and go for it solo” said our Austrian.

But then came the most bizarre of twists. It came when he was approaching a slight downhill close to km 100. A time measurement strip has been laid there and Matthias was about to cross over it when it suddenly came loose and hit his front wheel:

Matthias Brändle:

“ A photographer motorcycle has hit it and it suddenly flew right into my front wheel and I could do
Nothing but crash” he said.

He was taken to the hospital with a Broken collarbone that will be operated tomorrow.

“It’s a shame” He said. “ something like this should not be happening in a race but I blame nobody as it was not done on purpose. I am a guy that prefers to think positively so although it’s real painful to
Lose a chance to win in my home country for ICA , I will come back stronger and ya e faith in my teammates: They can win here !”

Stage 2 tomorrow. We will move in.
