KING BEN : UNFINISHED BUSINESS

A few km to the finish on the mighty Grossglockner , Ben Hermans was far from sure that he will be able to pull the victory off.

He is a very calculated type , our Belgian. He analyzes situations to the last detail. At one point he was sure that his main rival will be Alexander Vlasov from Gazprom. But then he listened carefully and changed his mind. “He was breathing so heavily so I knew he is no longer a threat”.

Then came Ancona from Team Movistar. But he was able to distance him too. The last one was Ben O’Connor from Team Dimension data that was able to take a small gap about 1 km to the finish. But Hermans stayed calm. “In this altitude it’s important not to go too deep” he explained. “So when he was able to close the gap on O’Connor, he decided to attack his fatigued rival and leave him behind for good.

But BEN was far from being over jubilant tonight after the great victory that got him the Leader Jersey.

“We have a very difficult task of defending it” he said. His two rivals are only 8 and 12 sec behind and tomorrow we expect lots of pressure , especially from the three pro teams here.

A 1st category climb awaits in the first part of the stage. A real danger indeed. Ben’s 5 teammates will have to rise to the challenge. They vow to Meet it head on.
