It was a finish that left jaws dropped open and TV broadcasters wondering how to explain what in the world they had just witnessed. The race situation in the final 10 kilometers of Amstel Gold Race seemed fairly clear-cut. There were two riders leading – expecting to duke it out for the top step of the podium at the first of the Ardennes Classics. In their wake, were three chase groups and a reduced peloton.

“I assumed I was racing for fifth place,” said Simon Clarke. The race-weary Australian was part of the fourth chase group on the hilly Limburg roads. “Then the group caught us from behind, and here I was, flat out, thinking: ‘Well, I guess I’m not even going to be finishing in the top ten.’ ”

And then, suddenly, inexplicably, the race came back together at the front. And Clarke was in it to win it.

“I wasn’t aware everything was close together until I saw everyone in front of me with just over a kilometer to go,” Clarke said. “It was pretty crazy. And pretty motivating. I knew Van der Poel was the fastest guy, so I got his wheel.”

And sprinted off it. Mathieu van der Poel (COC) took the win. Clarke snagged second.

“Van der Poel is flying at the moment,” said Clarke. “I’m pretty happy coming second to him.”
