Tour de Suisse stage 1 REPORT

An 18-kilometer TTT kicked off the nine-day race in Switzerland Saturday. It did not go as planned for the pinstriped team who had prepared well and hoped for a better result than 13th place (same time as 12th), but with 8 days to go, the team is disappointed but already looking ahead.

Bauke Mollema: "Things did not go exactly as planned, we had been training for two days and one day on the course, and we were aiming for better than we did. But in a race, it's never an ideal situation and you have to improvise a little bit sometimes, and that's what we had to do today.

"It will make the rest of the week a little more difficult as time gaps are big to some teams, we will have to see in the mountain stages and the last TT. I am still confident about my form so there's still a lot to come - for me, I think there's a good result that's possible this week."

DS Kim Andersen: "It's difficult to say what went wrong – there was not really any big mistake – but we were not rolling as we should and we lost a rider early, which was unexpected.

"It's such a nice discipline when it's going well, but can go the opposite too: when you fail, everyone fails. Now we need to gather ourselves again; it’s a new day tomorrow, and we will keep fighting to do a good Tour de Suisse and continue our preparation for the Tour."
